The legend behind Onam:

Mahabali was a generous and loyal king. During his period, people enjoyed their life and there were no poverty or sorrows. At that time, the Devas sought the help of Vishnu to destroy Mahabali's power. Vishnu took the form of a Vamana and approached Mahabali. He asked some land. Mahabali told him that he could take as much as land as he wished, but Vamana said that he just needed land which could cover with his three steps. Mahabali agreed.

Then Vamana began to expand. With his first step, he covered the sky, with his seconed step, the whole earth, and then there was no space for third step. Then Mahabali offered his head as the last step. Vaman put his foot on Mahabali's head and pushed him down to ‘ pathalam'. Mahabali begged to give him a chance to visit his subjects once in an year, as he was given the permission. Onam is the occasion when the righteousness king makes his visit to see the subjects of Kerala.

On the eve of thiruvonam, he comes to meet his people. In the memory of those good old days, Keralites celebrate onam with their heart and soul.
